Malawi vice president killed in plane crash along with 9 other passengers
Malawi's Vice President Saulos Chilima was killed in a plane crash on June 10, 2024. The Dornier 228 aircraft, operated by the Malawi Defence Force, crashed in the Chikangawa Forest Reserve while Chilima and nine other passengers were en route to attend a funeral in the Northern Region of Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera confirmed the tragic news, declaring a period of national mourning .
Chilima had been serving as Vice President since 2020 and was known for his efforts in political reform and anti-corruption initiatives. He was previously involved in a major corruption scandal, but the charges were dropped earlier in 2024.
